Study on Non-performing assets – NPA of State Bank of India (MBA Finance)
Introduction
State Bank of India (SBI) is an Indian multinational public sector bank and financial services statutory body headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. SBI is the 48th largest bank in the world by total assets and ranked 221st in the Fortune Global 500 list of the world's biggest corporations of 2020, being the only Indian bank on the list. It is a public sector bank and the largest bank in India, with a 23% market share by assets and a 25% share of the total loan and deposits market. SBI has Total assets of 59.54 lakh crores INR, Gross non-performing assets (NPA) of SBI fell 7.5 per cent to 90,927.8 crore in Q4FY23, from 98.347 crore the previous quarter.
The main challenge facing the banks is the disbursement of funds in quality assets (Loans and Advances) or otherwise it leads to Non-Performing Assets (NPA). NPA refers to classification for loans
on the books of financial institutions that are in default or are in arrears on scheduled payments of
principal or interest. In other words, NPA means all those assets which don’t generate regular income. According to RBI, terms loans on which interest or instalment of principal remain overdue for a period of more than 90 days from the end of a particular quarter is called as a Non-Performing Assets. When the money lent becomes uncollectible the banks come under a financial burden affecting their functioning as a whole. So, NPAs directly impact the performance of the bank
The impact of rising NPAs can be as follows:
- Rising NPAs undermine the bank’s image, making the public lose trust in banks.
- The depositors may withdraw their deposits causing liquidity issues for banks.
- The lack of liquidity prevents banks from lending for other productive activities in the economy.
- The curb in investments may slow down the economy leading to unemployment, inflation, bear market, etc.
- To maintain their profit margins, banks will be forced to increase interest rates which again hurt the economy.
NPA have adverse impact on the banking system because these accounts show that the money of bank is locked and cannot be further used for any productive purpose. If there is a continuous increase in NPA then it is very dangerous for the existence of the bank because it hampers the repayment capacity of the bank. The sound financial position of bank depends upon the recovery of
loans or its level of Non-Performing Assets (NPA). To improve the efficiency and profitability of banks the NPA needs to be reduced and controlled. This paper highlights the concept of NPA, causes of NPA, Intra comparison of NPA of State Bank of India of yester years through various accounting and statistical tools and also provides some suggestions how to overcome this burden of NPA in State Bank of India.
