Energy Management in NTPC Thermal Power Plant (MBA Operations)
Introduction
Energy management in thermal power plants is a crucial aspect of ensuring efficient operations, minimizing environmental impact, and contributing to the overall sustainability of energy generation. Thermal power plants play a significant role in meeting global energy demands, but they also account for a substantial portion of greenhouse gas emissions. Effective energy management strategies are essential for maximizing energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and conserving resources. This study will help to understand the importance of energy management in thermal power plants, key strategies, and their benefits.
NTPC Limited, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation, is an Indian central Public Sector Undertaking under the ownership of the Ministry of Power and the Government of India, who is engaged in the generation of electricity and other activities. The headquarters of the PSU are situated at New Delhi. NTPC's core function is the generation and distribution of electricity to State Electricity Boards in India. The body also undertakes consultancy and turnkey project contracts that involve engineering, project management, construction management, and operation and management of power plants. The total installed capacity of the company is 72,304 MW (including 13,465 MW through JVs/Subsidiaries) across the country, (26 Coal based stations, seven gas based stations, one hydro station, one small hydro, 11 Solar PV, and one wind based Station) and 25 Joint Venture stations (nine coal based, four gas based, eight hydro-powered, one small hydro, two wind-powered, and one Solar PV)
NTPC Thermal Power Plants are the most important source of power generation. They are based on the Rankine Cycle where high pressure and high temperature steam raised in a boiler is expanded through a steam turbine that drives an electric generator. In a thermal power plant, the chemical energy stored in fossil fuels such as coal, fuel oil, natural gas is converted successively into thermal energy, mechanical energy and finally electrical energy for continuous use and distribution across a wide geographic area. Thermal Power plants have very high availability. Their unplanned or forced outage rates are very low. Thermal Power Plant assets need to be flexible to meet rapidly fluctuating demand levels.
In India we are facing huge electricity demands, resulting power cuts. Coal and gas are imported from other country which is limited energy resources, scarcity of capital and high interest costs for the addition of new generation capacity is leading to the increased cost of electrical energy in India. The only viable way to handle this crisis, apart from capacity addition, is the efficient use of available energy, which is possible only by continuously monitoring and controlling the use existing energy generational facilities.
Objective of study
- To know how thermal power plant works
- To know NTPC and its thermal power plant
- To know problem and challenges in Indian energy sector specially thermal power plant
- To understanding of energy management and its process, strategy in thermal power plant
