The rise of the Internet and development of collaborative software have instilled a new dimension into project management. Software project management provides us with effective theories for planning, systematizing, and managing multifaceted activities for accomplishing specific tasks. Software project management is the discipline of initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing the work of a team to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria. The primary challenge of software project management is to achieve all of the project goals within the given constraints. This paper explores recent literature that evaluates virtual project management and virtual teams to determine the extent new technologies affect projects with members in dispersed locations. It is found that the new channels of communication offer opportunities for participation, but it is still more difficult to manage a virtual team than an on-site team.

Increasing globalization of organizations and proliferation of new technologies have made multi-cultural virtual teams not only a reality but important also. Global virtual team members rarely meet face-to-face and thus deal with challenges which not associated with traditional collocated teams. These challenges faced by virtual project team members form the basis for the first phase of research. The research was conducted in three phases. Initially, in phase one of the research, important behavioural contributors to virtual project management were identified from the literature.

The researcher gathered these contributing factors within a framework. This model was empirically tested through statistical method, against data on the relevant variables, obtained from a survey of software houses. Findings from the model conclude that several contributing factors of virtual project management (VPM), namely, communication, motivation, information security, trust building etc reinforce each other to lead to effective virtual project management. Virtual project management refers to the process of planning, executing, and controlling projects in a remote or virtual environment. It involves coordinating teams, resources, and tasks to achieve project goals without the need for physical proximity.

  1. Virtual project management relies on digital tools and communication platforms to facilitate collaboration among team members who may be located in different geographic locations.
  2. Effective virtual project management requires leveraging a range of technology tools, such as project management software, video conferencing, instant messaging, and cloud storage.
  3. Clear and consistent communication is crucial. Virtual project managers must establish communication norms, ensure accessibility, and promote open channels for team members to discuss progress, issues, and ideas.
  4. Building a sense of teamwork and camaraderie among remote team members is important. Virtual managers can use team-building activities, online social events, and regular check-ins to foster a sense of belonging.
  5. Virtual managers need to assign tasks, set deadlines, and track progress using project management software to ensure accountability and project milestones are met.
  6. Virtual teams often span different time zones. Efficient scheduling and overlapping working hours for crucial communications are essential to maintain collaboration.
  7. After project completion, virtual managers should conduct post-project reviews to gather insights, identify lessons learned, and improve future virtual project management efforts.
Virtual project management demands strong communication skills, adept use of technology, and an understanding of the unique challenges and benefits of remote work. Effective virtual project managers can lead diverse teams to successful project outcomes while adapting to the evolving dynamics of virtual collaboration.
